Teen angst is alive and very unwell, and somehow refreshing to hear from the 18-year-old Disney Channel alum. Woozy, indie-punk, with a Talking Heads dreaminess and pointed lyrics about technology's proliferation, and pondering our emergence from pandemic-spawned isolation. The 26-year-old Virginian offers real-deal country, authentically sung without excessive pop gloss. Her lyrics offer emotional looks at love, and moving on from addiction. The lyrics fascinate, with some optimism peeking through (“put on my tap dancing shoes, my lap dancing shoes") amid the moody ruminations ("What doesn’t kill you just makes you crazier.") "The Gothfather," Cave, sinks his Voice of Doom into a cinematic collection of songs with long-ago collaborator Ellis. Need a good exercise workout album? Look no further. Uniquely sung, sharp wordplay with off-kilter points of view, set to engaging folk-Americana melodies. The kind of scruffy, scrappy rock many fans would say we need in greater supply.ġ4. The Danish rock band's urgency is infectious the hooks are divine. Pom Pom Squad, "Death of a Cheerleader"Īnother short and sweet rookie debut specifically 30 minutes of indie-rock with punk attitude offering a dark, fearless look at adolescence. The 20-year-old English alt-pop artist breathtakingly zips through 10 songs in 18-minutes on her debut mixtape. Yes, THAT Tom Jones, still singing with "Delilah"– and "She's a Lady" sized vigor and virality, but fully accepting he's 81 and growing old isn't for the faint of heart. These would be the 18 albums of 2021 I'd most recommend gifting. Let's pretend it's 20 years ago, when people actually bought albums.
